Protecardio: A 100% natural formula for controlling cholesterol levels
Protecardio is a food supplement designed to help control cholesterol levels and thus avoid cardiovascular risks caused by the formation of atheroma plaques on the wall of the arteries. This product combines in a single capsule 10 mg of monacolin K, from fermented red rice and 30 mg of coenzyme Q10. Monacolin K and coenzyme Q10 are two substances with beneficial effects for the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels in the body.
Fermentation of red rice by the yeast Monascus purpureus produces Monacolin K, a molecule similar to Lovastatin. This molecule works by competitively inhibiting a key enzyme within the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, HMG-CoA reductase. As a result, monacolin K can effectively modulate the lipid profile by reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (1, 2, 3, 4).
At first, its efficiency was discussed as an natural alternative to commercial statins, but as several studies have appeared that confirm its usefulness to control cholesterol, health authorities have accepted it. In fact, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has officially recognized that there is a direct relationship between the daily consumption of 10 mg of monacolin K, from rice fermented with the yeast Monascus purpureus, and the maintenance of normal levels of LDL cholesterol. in the blood (5).
Each Protecardio capsule contains 200 mg of fermented red rice, standardized to 5% in monacolin K, which corresponds to a daily supplementation of 10 mg of monacolin K (1 capsule/day), following the EFSA guidelines.
Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) also known as ubiquinone, is a molecule naturally present in mitochondria. Co-Q10 participates in numerous biological processes, although its main function is to actively participate in the synthesis of ATP. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is an important molecule made up of adenosine and phosphate that functions as a source of cellular energy. Without Co-Q10, there is no energy production (6).
Co-Q10 is produced in the body naturally, however, as we age, its production decreases and it is practically impossible to compensate for this decrease with diet. Because endogenous biosynthesis is our primary source of Co-Q10, supplementation is a must as we age (6).
The relationship between monacolin K and Co-Q10
The administration of statins or the consumption of monacolin K can cause a decrease in Co-Q10 levels, once it is synthesized in the body through the same synthetic route of cholesterol (7). For this reason, it is normally recommended to supplement with Co-Q10 when taking statins or monacolin K. Protecardio also provides Co-Q10 in its formula, thus avoiding the need to take a second food supplement. Each capsule features 30 mg of CoQ10, providing safety and convenience for supplementation.
