There’s a search that many women carry out in silence. They turn to search engines because of bloating, dry skin or mood swings that just won’t settle in the days leading up to their period, and start reading about evening primrose oil. Then they realise there are options containing borage, others containing only evening primrose, some with added vitamins and others with nothing else. And the inevitable question arises: which one actually makes sense?

The difference between a supplement that makes a difference and one that doesn’t often isn’t down to the marketing on the bottle. It lies in what’s inside, in what proportions, in what form, and whether those ingredients work together or simply coexist. That’s exactly what’s worth checking before you buy.

Your period and your skin need something specific

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has many facets. For some women, it’s tender breasts. For others, it’s water retention, low mood or skin that suddenly seems duller and drier. It’s not all in your head. There is a biological mechanism behind it, and it has to do with how the body produces and regulates certain mediators from essential fatty acids.

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid that the body needs to produce type 1 prostaglandins, molecules involved in hormonal balance and the inflammatory response at both the skin and reproductive levels. The problem is that the body converts linoleic acid into GLA via an enzyme that often does not work efficiently, particularly under stress, with irregular diets or during certain stages of the cycle.

When GLA is in short supply, the skin loses part of its natural barrier, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases, and the skin feels drier and less resilient. And at a hormonal level, the balance becomes less stable. That is why direct supplementation with GLA makes clear biological sense: it does not depend on conversion, as it is already in its active form.

Evening primrose oil on its own versus the combined formula

Evening primrose oil contains approximately 9% GLA. Borage oil contains up to 20 per cent. When combined in the same formula, the resulting GLA profile is more complete and the effective dose per capsule increases without the need to increase the number of capsules. This is a practical difference, not a cosmetic one.

But there is another factor that alters the outcome: what accompanies the GLA. Taking GLA in isolation, with nothing else, is just a starting point. Adding vitamin B6 in its bioactive form, pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P), is what transforms this supplementation into something that also directly supports hormonal regulation, as vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and normal psychological function. And natural vitamin E, D-alpha-tocopherol, protects those cell membranes from oxidative damage, extending the benefit to skin health.

The form of the ingredients matters just as much as the ingredients themselves. Conventional vitamin B6 requires conversion in the liver to become active. P5P is already the active form, ready to be used directly by the body. Synthetic vitamin E is half as potent as the natural form. These are details that may seem technical on paper, but in practice they determine whether the supplement works or simply passes through the body.

Evening Primrose and Borage Complex: the thoughtfully formulated blend

Nutribiolite’s Evening Primrose and Borage Complex combines evening primrose oil containing 9% GLA with borage oil containing 20% GLA, both first-cold-pressed, ensuring that the nutrients remain intact without being degraded by heat. The combination provides 12 per cent GLA in the total formula, obtained from two complementary sources that mutually reinforce each other’s fatty acid profile.

Vitamin B6 is present as pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P), the bioactive form that requires no conversion. Vitamin E is D-alpha-tocopherol, the natural form with the highest bioavailability. These three components – GLA, vitamin B6 and vitamin E – work synergistically: GLA as a precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, vitamin B6 helping to regulate hormones and reduce tiredness and fatigue, and vitamin E protecting cells against oxidative damage and supporting healthier skin.

The product comes in easy-to-swallow softgel capsules, with a pack of 170 capsules providing a supply of between 85 and 170 days, depending on the chosen dose. Take 1 to 2 capsules a day with a meal, preferably with foods containing healthy fats to optimise the absorption of the oils.

Frequently asked questions before buying

What exactly is GLA from evening primrose and borage used for?

GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that acts as a precursor to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. The body needs it to maintain hormonal balance, support reproductive health and preserve the skin’s barrier. When the body’s conversion of linoleic acid into GLA is inefficient, direct supplementation provides GLA in its ready-formed state, without relying on that conversion.

What is the difference between evening primrose on its own and evening primrose combined with borage?

Evening primrose oil contains around 9 per cent GLA, whilst borage oil contains up to 20 per cent. Combining them allows for a higher concentration of GLA per capsule and makes the most of the complementary fatty acid profiles of each source. A combined formula is not simply twice as much of one; it offers a more balanced omega-6 spectrum.

Can I take this if I’m already taking other supplements?

This supplement can usually be taken alongside other supplements. If you are taking medication or several supplements at the same time, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting. The capsule contains gelatine, so it is not suitable for people who avoid animal-derived ingredients.

Why does it contain vitamin B6 and vitamin E if it already has GLA?

Because each ingredient fulfils a different function and they enhance each other’s effects. Vitamin B6, in the form of P5P, helps regulate hormonal activity and reduce tiredness and fatigue, which is particularly important during your period. Natural vitamin E protects cells against oxidative damage and supports skin health. Together, the three ingredients provide more comprehensive support than GLA alone.

How long do you need to take it before you notice any effects?

Consistent use is key. Supplements of this type are designed for long-term use as part of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. The pack of 170 capsules lasts between 85 and 170 days, depending on whether you take 1 or 2 capsules a day, allowing you to continue taking the supplement without frequent interruptions.
