Protecardio

The extract of red yeast rice is the most effective cholesterol-lowering nutraceutical on the market. In particular, its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of monacolin K within the extract.

What is the mechanism of action of Protecardio?

Protecardio is a natural food supplement designed with the purpose of mantaining healthy cholesterol levels. The fermentation of red yeast rice by the fungus Monascus purpureus, produces Monacolin K, which is a natural statin-like molecule. It acts by competitively inhibiting a key enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) within the pathway of cholesterol biosynthesis. As a result, Monacolin K can effectively modulate the lipid profile by reducing total cholesterol and low-density-lipo-protein cholesterol LDLC (the bad cholesterol). Protecardio is carefully fermented to avoid the presence of Citrinin.

Red Yeast Rice

Protecardio contains 200 mg Monascus purpureus fermented rice (Red Yeast Rice), which has 5% Monacolin K (10 mg/ capsule). Monacolin K from red yeast rice contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 10 mg monacolin K from fermented red yeast rice preparations.

A recent scientific study carried out in patients intolerant to statins reported that red yeast rice was as effective to induce a dose-dependent decrease of LDLC levels, with a superior safety and tolerability profile. In fact, the European Food Safety Authority has recently stated that there is a relationship between the consumption of monacolin K from red yeast rice and maintenance of normal blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone)

Ubiquinone is also known as Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10. Factors such as age, cholesterol level, disease, exercise regimen, gender, muscle mass, and race can decrease the plasma CoQ10 concentrations. Once we humans reach adulthood, the bio-synthesis of CoQ10 decreases with increasing age. It is practically impossible to make up for the decrease in endogenous CoQ10 synthesis by eating more CoQ10-rich foods. Because endogenous bio-synthesis is our primary source of Coenzyme Q10, supplementation is a must as we grow older.

For the purpose of cellular bio-energetics, which is the bio-medical term for the transformation of the energy stored in nutrients to the chemical energy of ATP, the ubiquinone form of CoQ10 is essential. The process cannot start without it. In the inner membrane of the mitochondria in the cells where energy is produced, the CoQ10 is much needed in the form of ubiquinone. 

The consumption of Monacolin K results in an inhibition of CoQ10 in the organism. For this reason, Protecardio includes an additional 30 mg of CoQ10 for each capsule, to compensate for the possible shortage of this enzyme in the body.
